About the Theme

“The Context” invites scholars, critics, authors, and professors worldwide to contribute to a groundbreaking publication that challenges, redefines, and expands the traditional literary canon. As the literary landscape evolves in response to technological advancements, interdisciplinary approaches, and shifting cultural contexts, this issue explores the dynamic intersections of diverse voices, genres, and mediums. We welcome papers that critically examine established literary hierarchies, promote inclusivity, and pioneer innovative research methodologies, ultimately enriching our understanding of the literary canon and its role in shaping cultural narratives.

Subthemes for Consideration
  1. Canon Formation and Power Dynamics: Historical analysis of how canons emerge, evolve, and perpetuate certain power structures; examination of institutional gatekeeping in literary canonization
  2. Decolonizing Literary Studies: Approaches to dismantling colonial literary hierarchies; recovery and revaluation of indigenous literatures and oral traditions
  3. Gender and Sexuality in Canon Formation: Feminist interventions in canonical revision; queer readings of established texts; recovery of women writers excluded from traditional canons
  4. Digital Humanities and Canon Expansion: Use of computational methods and digital archives to identify, analyze, and promote overlooked works; democratization of      canonical    access through technology
  5. Translation, World Literature, and Canon Mobility: The role of translation in canon formation; analysis of how texts move across linguistic and cultural boundaries
  6. Regional and Vernacular Literatures: Elevation of works in nondominant languages; studies of regional literary traditions that challenge national canonical frameworks
  7. Interdisciplinary Approaches to Canon Revision: Integration of insights from sociology, anthropology, psychology, and other disciplines in reconceptualizing literary value
  8. Pedagogical Innovations: Classroom strategies for teaching canonical and non-canonical texts; curriculum development that balances traditional and emerging canons
  9. Genre Hierarchies and Canon Formation: Analysis of how genre distinctions affect canonical status; recovery of popular, speculative, or marginalized genres
  10. Neurodiversity and Disability Perspectives: Literary voices addressing neurodivergence and disability; reinterpreting canonical works through disability studies frameworks
  11. Class Consciousness in Literary Evaluation: Working-class literatures and their relation to canonical traditions; economic factors in publishing and literary prestige
  12. Digital Literature and Emergent Forms: Analysis of how new media and digital platforms challenge traditional understandings of literary value and canonicity

Submission Guidelines

  • Journal title: The Context: Journal of English Studies (ISSN 2349-4948)
  • Word Count: 2,000-3,000 words (including abstract and references)
  • Manuscript Template: Available on journal website
  • Citation Style: MLA 9th Edition

  • Review Process: Double-blind peer review
  • Authorship: Only single-author papers will be considered
  • Article Processing Fee: INR 800 | USD 50 (after acceptance)

Submission Process

Please submit your manuscript as a Word document (.docx) to thecontext@outlook.com with the subject line "Open Canon Submission: [Your Paper Title]". The submission should include:

  1. Author details (name, affiliation, contact information) including ORCiD + Vidwan ID for Indian authors and ORCiD for authors outside India.
  2. Manuscript with a 200-word abstract and 4-6 keywords
  3. All figures and tables integrated within the text
  4. All reference list in MLA 9th Edition format
  5. Foot notes not allowed; End notes can be accepted but not preferred.
  6. Research funding agency name, if applicable.
  7. Acknowledgements, if any.
